Tallmadge 35, Green 7: Blue Devils win Suburban League title

TALLMADGE: The Tallmadge Blue Devils are again the Suburban League football champions.

Senior quarterback Anthony Gotto rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another to guide host Tallmadge to a 35-7 victory over Green on a rainy Friday night at Rossiaky Stadium.

The Blue Devils’ (8-2, 6-1) triumph over the Bulldogs (6-4, 4-3) coupled with Wadsworth’s 41-20 victory over Nordonia (7-3, 5-2) allowed Tallmadge to win its third Suburban League title in a row.

“It is special to win three in a row,” Tallmadge coach Joe Vassalotti said. “This group of seniors has been a big part of it. A lot of them played as sophomores.

“Every season is unique. This was a chance for these seniors to win a league championship as seniors and make it their own. We knew we had at least an opportunity to tie for the title. They seized the opportunity tonight.”

Tallmadge will also likely host a Division II state playoff game next week.

Gotto and other classmates made sure they would go home winners on Senior Night with a 28-point second quarter.

“We came in real focused this week and took advantage of them playing man-to-man defense,” Gotto said. “I started to get plays running the ball, which opened things up and gave me opportunities to make plays.”

Gotto scored touchdowns on runs of 1, 80 and 11 yards in the second quarter. He also threw an 87-yard touchdown pass to junior Jim Aumont.

“The big thing on offense was taking care of the football and not turning it over,” Vassalotti said. “The last three weeks have been a bit of a nightmare with turnovers. We were also able to break some big plays tonight against their pressure defense, and our defense made some stops when they had to.”

Tallmadge led 35-0 in the third quarter after junior Bobby Clark rushed for a 48-yard touchdown, and senior Kody Edwards kicked his fifth point after.

Gotto played three quarters and finished with 131 yards rushing on eight carries. He also completed 7-of-9 passes for 169 yards.

Clark and seniors Johnny Linn, Daniel Ray and Zach Skraba were also effective rushing the ball.

“It feels really good that we were able to shut down our rival like that,” Skraba said. “We played together in all phases of the game and got some momentum going into the playoffs.”

Senior linemen Alec White, Tony Anzaldi, Scott Noel, Sebastian Boggs and Jacob Wood were solid offensively along with junior Joe Lowery.

“The first quarter was close,” Ray said. “We came out in the second quarter, and our offense started to pick it up. Our defense has been solid all season.”

Linn and senior Cordt Skraba had interceptions. Seniors Bryon Cook, Logan Banks and Michael Paulo also gave Green fits defensively.

Green scored its touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run by senior Seth Wieland. His twin brother Zach did not play due to injury.

Bulldogs senior quarterback Darryl Corrin passed for 220 yards. Seth Wieland, senior Ron Brant and juniors Brandon Papp and Andrew Ventura were his top receivers.

The win moved Tallmadge’s record to 20-1 against league foes since 2010.

“It feels great,” Gotto said. “Our main goal every year is to the win the league, and obviously we want to win in the state playoffs too.”
